Teaching

Monday Morning Class

In this fun morning class at Coburg House Art Studios you will have the opportunity of learning the basics of jewellery making including saw-piercing, soldering, texturing, forming and chain making. Suitable for complete beginners or students who want to develop their skills or work on a specific project. You will come up with ideas for your own personal project with advice from me and then be shown any additional techniques relevant to your project. The class will be limited to 5 students which is ideal for getting lots of one to one help and top tips. I have almost 20 years of teaching experience and love problem solving to help you create your perfect piece.

Corporate Jewellery Workshops

A fun and unique alternative to Whisky or Gin Tastings. I can offer different styles of workshops to cater for different sizes of groups. I can bring along a selection of work and give a presentation based on my work for large groups, or create bespoke jewellery making sessions for smaller groups of corporate clients. I have previously organised jewellery workshops for clients such as Visit Scotland and Reel-Time Events. Please see my brochure here and contact me for further details or a personalised quote.

Private Tuition

I offer one to one tuition in my studio with each student receiving a personal lesson tailored to their own needs. Starting from very basic techniques such as saw-piercing sheet metal and learning how to solder,  students can progress to more complicated techniques such as bezel setting stones. I have had students who have made some jewellery in the past but would like to learn a new specific technique, or would just like to finish off some previous projects. I have also had students who just want a bit of advice on how to improve pieces to take them to the next step of selling to the public. If this is something which you are interested in then please contact me for more details.

Jewellery Experience Days

I am now offering the opportunity for you and a group of your friends to come along to the workshop and have a wonderful day of jewellery making. This is suitable for up to 5 people. You can arrange a date and time to suit you and your friends, and even specify how long you would like the workshop to run for, or what type of jewellery you would like to make. Prices start from £35 per person for a 1 hour Incorporating Pearls workshop. Please contact me for further details and a quote based on your requests.

Wire Jewellery

Term 2

Wire is a versatile material to use for jewellery making as it comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. It creates light and flexible pieces and allows much larger and more sculptural results. You will be encouraged to develop a creative approach to designing and making your own simple and complex projects. You will design and produce your own wire jewellery projects using the techniques covered during the course. You will have the opportunity to explore a range of metals like copper, brass, and silver to create a variety of results. This course is suitable for beginners and more advanced students wishing to develop their skills.

Creative Rings and Bangles

Term 3

This short workshop-based course enables you to explore your potential as a maker of creative objects by producing an individual, stylish piece of jewellery, beginning with the simple band ring. You will explore different techniques used to texture metal using hand tools and hammers. This course will cover sawing, filing, soldering and roll printing with further experiments into bangle making to consider form and design.

Leith School of Art

Textured Rings

27th April 2024

In this one day workshop students will make their own textured silver ring which will curve outward from the centre, known as a synclastic ring.

You will learn a variety of skills including saw-piercing, soldering, shaping and finishing techniques to produce your very own fitted ring. You’ll be able to add detail to the surface of your ring by applying a roll-printing texture which will not be lost in the curving process.

The course is suitable for beginners, but also offers development for those who may already be familiar with the ring making process from one of our previous workshops or evening classes.

Thursday Evening Class

A comprehensive course covering all aspects of the art of jewellery making. This course is suitable for both beginners and more experienced students who wish to refine their skills. The small class size enables each student to work on an individual sustained project throughout the term. There is assistance from two tutors to provide expert one-to-one tuition. All basic jewellery techniques are covered: piercing, soldering and applying texture to metal. As students’ individual interests and project requirements emerge, a selection of specialist processes are taught throughout the course, including sand casting, basic stone setting techniques, raising, keum-boo and fold-forming.
